Ribfest is Taking Over Marina Park & You’re Going to Want Seconds

Get your wet wipes ready and maybe break out the stretchy pants because Thunder Bay’s Ribfest is back, and it’s saucier than ever. From August 21st to 24th, Marina Park is transforming into a BBQ lover’s paradise, complete with fall off the bone ribs, BBQ royalty, and golden potato tornadoes.

Let’s be real— Ribest lures you in, as you always smell it before you even see it. That smoky, slow-cooked goodness fills the Waterfront District air with mouthwatering hints of sauce, sweet woodsmoke, and sizzling meat. It’s basically summer’s cologne.

But this year’s picnic in the park is levelling up.  We’re talking about award-winning ribbers who travel North America serving up racks so juicy they should come with a warning label.  Ribs Royale is rolling in from Nevada with a menu that’s totally gluten-free (yes, even the sauce and sides), and over 50 first-place awards in ribs and sauce to back it up. If you leave without trying the pulled pork, you’re doing it wrong. While Dinosaur Smokehouse is bringing that Little Rock heat, with slow-smoked ribs, chicken, and pulled pork so flavourful it practically dances on your tongue. It’s southern comfort with a side of slaw.

Hungry yet? Because your go-to Ribfest order is gonna be the trio plate: ribs, pulled pork and chicken (a vegetarian’s nightmare… also the name of one of the combos). Add some beans, creamy slaw, and a cold drink, and you’re living your best foodie life.

But Ribfest isn’t just about the ribs…it’s got major foodie cred. You’ll also find local favourites like: Masala Grille , Dulcita Mexican Delight, Theresa Italian Goods, Rocky Mountain Chocolate, Epic Cones

Bannock Lady, and more!  Pro tip: Don’t skip the tornado potato. It’s a spiral-cut, golden fried miracle.

Ribfest is also serving live local music all weekend long, featuring everything from rock and indie to eclectic TBay gems. It’s the perfect soundtrack to your BBQ-filled stroll or post meal lounge in the grass. And speaking of lounging,  Marina Park is honestly the ideal spot for picnic blankets, waterfront views, and no entry fee!

Meantime, the Kids Zone is packed with free themed activities daily to keep your littles entertained:

  • Thursday: Low-sensory day: A quieter, calmer experience for families who prefer a more accessible and relaxed environment. Expect less noise, fewer crowds, but same great food.
  • Friday: Carnival Day: Classic carnival games, bouncy castles and face painting.
  • Saturday: Dress-Up Day: Kids and grownups are invited to come in costume. Superhero? Princess? Pirate? All welcome.
  • Sunday: Science Day: Fun hands-on science experiments that are educational and entertaining.

There’s literally something for every kid (and kid-at-heart). But what makes Ribfest really special? It’s more than just killer food… it’s about Thunder Bay showing up, and supporting Our Kids Count. All proceeds are donated to the grassroots local organization, that does amazing work to help families in the community. So yes, eating that rack of ribs is basically a good deed.

Whether you go for the ribs, the music, or to support the community, Ribfest is the perfect summer sendoff. The even runs until 9:00 PM, Thursday to Sunday.
