Parenting in Thunder Bay is equal parts magical and what day is it again? Between naps, snacks, and trying to remember if you already drank that coffee, finding places that are welcoming, affordable, and fun for kids (and you) feels like a major win. Enter… your local Thunder Bay Public Library, aka the most underrated parenting hack in the city.
Whether you’re deep in the newborn fog or chasing a toddler who has very strong opinions (and a lot of questions), here are five reasons the Library is becoming every parent’s favourite place:
1. Your baby is allowed to be… a BABY
Let’s get this out of the way…yes, your baby can make noise at the library. Crying, babbling, giggling, dramatic squeals over Clifford the Big Red Dog, all normal, all welcome.
Libraries today are not silent, scary places guarded by shushing librarians. Children’s areas are designed for kids, with space to move, play, and explore. Staff genuinely want you there (even on those days when your baby chooses chaos). So if your toddler claps at Curious George or your infant announces their feelings loudly? You’re still good. Promise.
2. Free programs that actually save your sanity
Parenting is a full time job and daycare priced activities add up fast. The Library? Completely free. No registration fees, no surprise costs, no “just $40 per child” moments.
Across all four Library branches, you’ll find a steady rotation of family friendly programming, and this isn’t just sitting quietly with a book (although you can do that too). This is burn energy, laugh out loud programming that keeps kids busy and parents breathing. Some of our favourite activities include:
There’s also a full lineup of fun planned for March Break, which is huge when the weather is questionable and cabin fever is real!
3. Built-in social life (For Kids and Parents)
Making parent friends is weirdly hard. You can’t exactly walk up to someone at the grocery store and say, “Hi, our kids are both screaming and trying to escape the cart…want to grab coffee?”
Library programs make it easier. Family programs are one of the best low pressure ways to meet other parents with kids at similar ages and stages. It’s especially helpful for first time parents, families new to Thunder Bay, or anyone who hasn’t quite found “their people” yet.
4. Early literacy starts way earlier than you think
You don’t need your baby to read Shakespeare… you just need to talk, sing, and read with them, and the Library makes that easy. From story time to open play, kids benefit from being around books, language, music, and other tiny humans doing the same thing.
Children’s areas are stocked with toys and activities for free play, like train tables, building blocks, sensory toys and games that encourage imagination. Basically, if you kid is having fun, their brain is too!
5. It’s So Much More Than Just Books
Yes, there are books… lots of them, but the Thunder Bay Public Library is doing way more than that.
Each branch includes an Indigenous Knowledge Centre (IKC), guided by the Library’s Indigenous Relations team. These are welcoming spaces where families can learn and connect through story telling, author visits, and even cultural workshops like drop-in beading (no experience needed).
At the Library, you’ll also find free Wi-Fi, computers, and even local history and genealogy collections dating back to the early 1900s! Speaking of history, let’s give a little love for Waverley Library. It’s celebrating 75 years, and things are just getting started. With a massive Children’s Library expansion on the way and big community celebrations planned for 2026, there’s a lot of excitement building around this historic space.
So the bottom line, parenting can feel overwhelming , especially in those early months when every day blurs together. So if you’re wondering what to do with your baby or toddler today? Grab the diaper bag, embrace the chaos, and head to your nearest library. You’ve got this, and the Library’s got you.
