This one’s for the moms… well actually mostly for the dads, partners, and kids who are currently panic-googling “Mother’s Day ideas Thunder Bay.” Mother’s Day is creeping up, and if you’re wondering how to show the special woman in your life just how much she means to you, here’s the truth, it’s really not about buying the fanciest thing in the store.
Spoiler alert: She doesn’t need another bathrobe. She’s good on robes, she has robes, so what do moms really want? Thoughtfulness, time together, a little effort, maybe a mimosa or two and definitely snacks. The best gifts are experiences, the kind that turn into stories, inside jokes, photos, and memories everyone talks about later. Lucky for us, Thunder Bay knows a thing or two about experiences, so if you’re trying to plan a day that says “we appreciate you”, here are some local ideas.
Brunch: The Official Language of Mother’s Day
There’s something magical about brunch. Everyone gets dressed up, children temporarily behave like tiny royalty (in our dreams), the coffee flows, champagne pops, and most importantly, mom doesn’t cook. Here are a couple of our favourite brunch options on the big day:
The Wayland Mother’s Day Brunch Buffet
If you’ve been to the Wayland, you know… and you might be thinking, really, the place that actually refers to itself as a “dive bar”, for Mother’s Day?! Absolutely! I mean we did say this is about EXPERIENCES. The Wayland is a Westfort icon, has been part of Thunder Bay history since 1937 and still knows how to throw down. You can expect a loaded buffet (they have really upped their food game lately) and, of course, the unbeatable Caesar cocktails. If your mom loves good food and a little personality with her pancakes, this is it!
Prospector Steak House Mother’s Day Brunch
If your family really takes brunch seriously, The Prospector is your ideal location. With dreamy omelette stations, a prime rib carving station, citrus cured salmon, and those legendary Prospector buns (you know the buns…everyone knows the buns), it’s one of the best! Three seatings are available, and kids under four are free, which feels like reparations for parenting toddlers in public.
Hoito Mother’s Day Breakfast-Goods & Co.
For the moms who appreciate tradition, nostalgia, and carbs made with love, this Finnish feast includes Hoito favourites like pancakes, Pulla French toast, and a Scandinavian relish tray. Bonus: it’s a fundraiser for the Finlandia Co-op of Thunder Bay, so you can feel wholesome while eating your weight in breakfast.
Anchor & Ore Mother’s Day Brunch
This is the king of all brunches! From the classics, elevated favourites, and live entertainment by Mood Indigo Jazz it’s definitely a fun option that everyone leaves full (very full). Fancy? Yes. Worth it? Definitely. If your mom deserves queen treatment (yes, of course she totally does), consider this her coronation.
Shop With Mom (and Pretend You’re Not Last Minute)
If your mom says, “I don’t need anything,” what she often means is “take me somewhere fun and let me casually browse handmade things.”

Brunches & Mimosas Cooking Workshop
May 9th: 11 AM – 2 PM
Want to gift your mom a fun outing? This Confederation College workshop teaches easy brunch recipes paired with light mimosas (could it get any better?). It focuses on “approachable techniques, easy flavour combinations, and ways to bring a bit of weekend charm to your table without any stress or advanced cooking skills”. Participants will explore the basics of building a tasty brunch menu, gain confidence in preparing simple dishes, and enjoy a casual tasting experience. Yum!
May 9th: 2 PM – 5 PM: The Bodymind Centre
This is for the mystical and intuitive moms who already knew what you were doing before you did it. Learn tea leaf reading, symbolism, and intuition while sipping tea in a calm, cozy group setting. You’ll learn the traditional meanings of common symbols found in tea leaves, while exploring both structured interpretation and intuitive insight as you begin to “read” a tea cup in a whole new way.
George’s Market Sweet Moments with Mom Floral Workshop
May 23rd: Noon – 2 PM: Lakehead Beer Co.
This one is adorable. Part of George’s Market’s popular Gather & Grow floral workshop series, you and mom will create a spring floral centrepiece together with guidance from TBay flower queen, Graysen Thompson. Add in a George’s tasty snack box, a complimentary cocktail or mocktail from Lakehead Beer Co., and some photo worthy moments and it’s the perfect afternoon.
The Gift All Moms Secretly Want Most: Family Photos
Let’s be honest, we all know Mom is usually the one taking every photo. She’s behind the camera at birthdays, holidays, and vacations. Book the family photo session, because years from now, those photos will matter more than anything wrapped in a box.
When all else fails, get outside with mom and go for a hike on your favourite local trail. Also, don’t forget to make the card. Get the kids to make a handmade card with crooked marker hearts, misspelled words, and the message that says, “Mom, I love.” Those cards become family heirlooms. Don’t skip it!
So Thunder Bay, this is your reminder to celebrate the moms, grandmas, stepmoms, aunties, chosen moms, and every woman who has loved like one. (Make the reservation now before all the brunch spots fill up!).
