June in Thunder Bay just got a whole lot more colourful. Pride Month is here, and the city is not holding back with a month full of festivities, trivia, dance parties, drag shows, baseball, prom and a matchmaking night that sounds chaotic and amazing.
Here’s some ways you can participate:
International Friendship Gardens
June 6: 12 PM–6PM
This is the anchor event of the whole month. Thunder Pride’s annual festival is taking over the International Friendship Gardens for a full afternoon of community, celebration, and good energy. There’ll be live entertainment all day long, a rainbow runway, local drag stars, fun booths to explore, and this year, a brand new kids zone. Dig out that rainbow fit you’ve been saving for the right moment, because this is it!
Black Pirates Pub
June 6: Doors 9 PM $10/19+
The festival ends at 6 PM, which means you have exactly three hours to rest your feet before round two. Wiggins Productions is taking over Black Pirates Pub for LOUD & PROUD, a full Pride dance floor takeover. DJ sets from Amber Ail and Ariah will keep the energy going all night, with gogo sets from Mister E and Beatrix Muse. This is also Gent-Lee’s gogo debut, so you’ll want to be there for that. This is how you close out Pride Festival day properly!
Lakehead Beer Company
June 10: Registration at 8:00 PM
Who doesn’t love a trivia night? This event is free with categories built entirely around queer culture. Diva’s Trivia Night at Lakehead Beer Co is the event for anyone who has been waiting to put their drag knowledge, queer music obsession, and pop culture brain to the test. Hosted by queens Lolita and Shaela, the categories are Icons, Legends & Trailblazers celebrating queer figures and allies who broke barriers, Queer Music & Anthems that covers iconic dance floor defining hits, and Drag Universe. Teams up to six are welcome, so round up your crew and get there early to snag a seat.
Border Cats Game At Port
Arthur Stadium
June 11: First Pitch 6:45 PM
The Border Cats are hosting Pride at the Ballpark, and the only dress code is rainbow. Wear your colours, grab a hot dog, and cheer on the home team under the summer sky. This is a nice change of pace from the usual nightlife events and the place to wear that Pride jersey!
The 5th Annual Fort William First Nation Drag Show
June 18th: FWFN Arena Gym.
6 PM-8PM All Ages/FREE
If you’ve never been to a drag show, let this be the push you needed. Queer, straight, or anywhere in between, your first drag show is one of those nights you don’t forget. The glamour, the. performances, the queens will be having a blast, and they want you to have one too. Drag shows are comedy, cabaret, dance, spectacle and pure fun all rolled into one, and the whole point is that nobody is taking themselves too seriously.
This June, some of Thunder Bay’s best are hitting the stage. Returning for its 5th year, the FWFN Drag Show is all about “Colours of the Rainbow” this year, with a lineup featuring Shaela Vie, Ivan Love, Inova Guy, Olive Boogits, Anton Chinoor, and Ruby Redhot, plus the highly anticipated drag debut of Queen B. On top of the performances, there’ll be food, refreshments, and giveaways, and the whole thing is free and open to all ages. Bring the family, bring your friends, bring anyone who has ever said they don’t get drag.
Misfits Matchmaking: Pride Edition
Goods & Co
June 19: $10 /19+
Goods & Co Market and Wiggins Productions are throwing a matchmaking night for Pride, and they’ve handed hosting duties to Mz. Molly Poppinz, which tells you everything you need to know about how the night will roll out. With a tagline of “It’s the wine, not the label”, you know it’s going to be a wild time!
Expect something that’s more of an upbeat, chaotic, hilarious game show, rather than your typical singles event. With a whole lot of flirting, oversharing, fun crowd games, there’s a very real possibility of leaving with someone’s number, a new best friend, or at minimum a funny story. Come in your best outfit, bring an open mind, and see what happens!
Goods & Co
June 20: 17+, Free
Not everyone has great memories of high school prom. The stress, maybe you didn’t have a date… the feeling that it wasn’t quite made for you. That’s exactly why Queer Prom exists, and it’s back for round two at Goods & Co Market. Organized by Loud Women Collective, this one is open to anyone 17 and up and is designed to be as inclusive and welcoming as possible. Expect a live DJ, dancing under a disco ball, a makeup and hair station, a snack and soda bar, and fun cocktails from Woodside. It’s the prom experience done right with no awkward gym bleachers, no cliques, just a room full of people there to have a good time together. Whether you’re 17 or 47, this is the do-over night you’ve always wanted.
If you need something to wear, the Fancy Outfit Swap will be held on June 7th at the Friendzone inside Goods & Co. Stop by between 4 PM and 6PM to find your look and something with sparkles before the big night.
Pride Donuts are Back!
This isn’t an official event, but it absolutely deserves a spot on the list. Bay Village Coffee is bringing back its Pride donuts this June. They are colourful, covered in sugar, fluffy, and so delicious. Grab a box with your friends because you deserve a treat!
Happy Pride TBay!
